As part of the curriculum, students of 1st MSW, were taken to ‘Snehadaan’ by the Department of Social Work, St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Bengaluru. The session began at 10:30 AM. An insight into the organisation’s aims and objectives was given by Ms. Shyja Jose. She informed the students that Snehadaan was a 50 bedded care centre intended to support and treat people living with HIV (PLHIV). Snehadaan first began functioning in the year 1997. Currently, it provides an array of services for HIV infected children and adults, and palliative care for the terminally ill. Ms. Jose then described the challenges one faces while dealing with HIV/AIDS infected persons.
After the orientation session, students visited the school for the HIV infected children run by the organisation. It was informed that the children after becoming adults were free to pursue any field of study/work they were interested in. After a short interaction with the children, the orientation visit came to an end.
