Debate on Death Penalty

 


The Department of Social Work in collaboration with SWSA conducted a debate on the topic- ‘Death penalty’ on the 20th of February 2021. Tenzin Noryang from 1BSW, welcomed the participants. Concept note on the topic was presented by the organiser- Dr. S. Rama Gokula Krishnan, and the rules of the event were read subsequently. The Chief Guest of the event was Mr. Nirmal Joseph Das- Manager, International Justice Mission. A pre poll was conducted before the event to assess the audience attitude towards death penalty. The pre-poll results indicated that 41% of the participants supported death penalty and 36%  were against it, leaving behind 18% of the respondents who stated that they were undecided. Winning the coin toss, the team who argued against death penalty started off the debate. Ms. Nimisha and Ms. Radhai of 2BSW were the moderators of the debate. There were five participants from each team and every participant was given 4 minutes to present their view. Contestants put forth interesting arguments, shaping the audience’s perspective. After the debate, there was a post poll conducted and the results indicated that 51% were in support of death penalty, 33% were against it and 12% were undecided. Ms.Kezia of 2MSW was selected as the ‘best debater’ through an audience poll. Dr. S. Rama Gokula Krishnan delivered the vote of thanks and the event ended by 5.15pm.
