Social Workers as Special Educators

 


The fourth lecture under Alumni lecture series, organized by Social Work Students Association (SWSA) was conducted on 10th April, 2021 at 5 PM. Ms. Anna of 2nd BSW was the emcee for the programme. After the prayer song by Mahima of 1st BSW, a warm welcome was given to the speaker  by Tenzin of 1st BSW. Sumayya of 1st BSW was the moderator for the lecture.Ms.Lekha Hegde , Special Educator-Head Start Educational Academy was the speaker.  
      Mrs. Lekha started off her session with her knowledge about special children and their education. She shared her experience of being in St. Joseph’s college and how it shaped her future. She later spoke about her experiences on working as a special educator. She emphasized about the importance of Case Work as method of social work. She also listed out some of the common learning difficulties experienced by children with special needs . She explained the various roles a special educator can play while working among children with special needs. She mentioned the different skills needed for social workers like rapport building, observation skills, acquired patience and she also mentioned the challenges faced by special educators. After the Q&A session, Dr. Mary Princess Lavanya added some of her points to the related topic and gave a short summary on the topic. Ms. Sherin of 3rd BSW delivered the vote of thanks.
