Psychopathology Virtual Seminar

 


In collaboration with the University of Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), the School of Social Work, St Joseph's College, Bangalore organized a virtual Psychopathology seminar for the Medical and Psychiatry students. There were 10 students each from SJC and UNCW.  Students were divided into 10 groups and each group was given a specific psychiatric diagnosis to discuss. The two students working on the same topic were named ‘Buddies’. The buddies were asked get to know the differences in the psychiatric history, diagnostic criteria, cultural factors and treatment both in India and the US with regard to their diagnosis.  During the final session, each group was asked to present their topics. After the presentation the students were given an opportunity to share their feedback with regard to the seminar. On the whole the students had a very enriching experience getting to know each other and sharing their views and experiences on several aspects of psychiatry both in India and in the US.

Ambedkar Jayanti Celebration

 


The session was held on 15/04/2021 at 5:00pm considering the Birth Anniversary of Dr.B.R. Ambedkar, Indian social reformer . The session was emceed by Sr.Christine and moderated by The dean of School of Social Work, Fr. Augustine. To perceive the blessings of God throughout the session Miss Sheba from 2nd BSW started with a prayer song. Dr. Shari Tess Mathew,  gave a heartwarming welcome speech and welcomed the resource person to the session. Miss Ashwarya from 1 MSW gave a detailed introduction of the speaker to the participants.

Mr. Rajendra Prabhakar is the Executive Director of MARGA and have been giving lectures to different schools and colleges on the ideology and the life of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He particularly focuses on the struggle that Baba Sahib did for minority community in India.

During the one hour long session with Mr. Rajendra he talked about his foundation called MARGA and its work through out the years. Moreover he talked about the struggles that Ambedkar did for India in a detailed way. He highlighted the incidents where Dr. Ambedkar fought for Dalits rights and made history by fighting against the caste system. The session was summarized by the Dean of the School of Social Work Fr.Augustine by pointing out some of the important takeaways from the session. Vote of thanks was given by the program coordinator of SWSA Mr. Harris from 2nd BSW.

Social Workers as Special Educators

 


The fourth lecture under Alumni lecture series, organized by Social Work Students Association (SWSA) was conducted on 10th April, 2021 at 5 PM. Ms. Anna of 2nd BSW was the emcee for the programme. After the prayer song by Mahima of 1st BSW, a warm welcome was given to the speaker  by Tenzin of 1st BSW. Sumayya of 1st BSW was the moderator for the lecture.Ms.Lekha Hegde , Special Educator-Head Start Educational Academy was the speaker.  
      Mrs. Lekha started off her session with her knowledge about special children and their education. She shared her experience of being in St. Joseph’s college and how it shaped her future. She later spoke about her experiences on working as a special educator. She emphasized about the importance of Case Work as method of social work. She also listed out some of the common learning difficulties experienced by children with special needs . She explained the various roles a special educator can play while working among children with special needs. She mentioned the different skills needed for social workers like rapport building, observation skills, acquired patience and she also mentioned the challenges faced by special educators. After the Q&A session, Dr. Mary Princess Lavanya added some of her points to the related topic and gave a short summary on the topic. Ms. Sherin of 3rd BSW delivered the vote of thanks.

Former Student Bags Country's Biggest Beauty Pageant for Men


We are proud to announce that Mr. Songashim Rungsung from the recently graduated 18MSW batch has won the Rubaru Mr India-United Continents title at the Rubaru Mr India 2020-2021 pageant which was held in Goa. This is a truly significant achievement. He will now represent India at the Mr. United Continents event to be conducted later this year.  A quote from Songashim in 2019 suits this occasion- "They said I will never make it. They said I will never achieve anything but they only said. I heard, I took the hate but it didn’t stop me to lose focus on myself. I will keep paving my away." Hearty congratulations once again dear Songa!

Documentary Screening-Cleaning the Court Room

 

The documentary 'Cleaning the Court Room' was screened on 24th March 2021. The programme was organised in collaboration with Kreetam Law Associates.  The programme commenced with a welcome note by Ms.Aishwarya Toppo of 1st year MSW and Shikha Swaraj the General secretary(SWSA) 1st year MSW introduced the speakers. Ms.Girija of 1st year MSW gave the  inaugural prayer . Felicitation of the guests and speakers was done by  ,Fr Victor Lobo SJ (Principal St Joseph's College). After the felicitation of guests, the documentary ‘Cleaning the Court Room’ was screened. Screening of documentary was followed by discussion involving guest speakers.  Advocate Vasanth Adithya J-Founder and managing partner of Kreetam Law Associates, Dr Akkai Padmashali, Smt. Brinda Adige, Smt. Cynthia Stephen, Smt. Kathyayini Chama raj, Smt. Gita Menon, Shri R Manohar were the significant people present . 

The speakers reflected on the ideas like, in India how the faith in the judicial system is at stake and they discussed on the acute deficit of trust in the judiciary system. The delay in delivery of justice and its drawbacks was also discussed. The speakers vouched on the technology making the statistics more accessible to the public and how e- courts are becoming prompter and well-functioning. Speakers also discussed the best practices that can be adopted to strengthen the judiciary and all the speakers unanimously agreed that the selection process of the judges in our country should be made transparent. Concluding remarks was given by Fr Victor Lobo SJ.Vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Nadia of 2nd MSW- Treasurer- SWSA
